Fundoplication surgery is a procedure to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease to avoid the use of medication long term and achieve acceptable symptom relief. Surgery is used when symptoms of reflux are refractory to traditional medical treatment such as acid burning, regurgitation and nocturnal waking. It can also be used to treat reflux related cough, asthma and painful swallowing.
The operation is usually performed laparoscopically or keyhole. It involves approximately a 90 minute procedure and a two night stay in hospital. Recovery is approximately two weeks physically and some several weeks to get back to a normal diet. This is managed by a dietitian attached to Dr Baxter’s practice.
Dr Baxter has been performing this treatment since 1995 and regularly performs the procedure. There are a number of different techniques that can be used and this will be discussed with Dr Baxter at the time of consultation.
